For over a year now, Martin has been one of my furry little friends that come running to meet me when he sees me. Martin is a fox squirrel and is full of energy. He likes to eat nuts and is extremely stubborn when it comes to eating fruits and veggies even though they are better for him. He is a neighborhood squirrel and has a mate, whom I call Rose, and a son, Matthias.
I first got to know him last fall when I put nuts in the yard to get some photos of a squirrel. I sat in front of the window and had my camera ready to take pictures. Sadly to say, pictures through a glass window don’t look very good. So I started to open the window and take pictures of him. I only got a few good ones, but they weren’t clear. I soon gave up on taking pictures of squirrels.
I hadn’t seen him until one day he appeared on our deck, clawing at the wood trying to get a nut that my younger brother accidentally dropped between the slats. I was worried he would damage the deck so I tried to distract him by throwing nuts on the deck. Of course, then I grabbed my camera to get a close up image. He seemed to be unfazed by the fact that the door was wide open and everyone was trying to get a photo of him. He just ignored us and ate the nuts that I threw. I got my first clear photo of him and I was so excited.
Ever since then, if he and I are outside in the backyard at the same time, he comes running. I give him some nuts, or fruits if he is willing to take them. He is really a sweet squirrel with good intentions. There are times I that I wonder if he really cares about me, or if he is just here for the food but in the end, it makes our deck more joyful when he is near.
